Greeks, Phoenicians and Tartesos passed through Lucentum, while Roman Lucentum boasted baths and a forum. Along with Ilici (Elche), it was one of the largest towns in the Roman east coast of what is today Spain. Over the centuries, Lucentum became Leucante, and with the arrival of the Arabs it came to be known as Al-Laqant.
